Nationwide Blackout Looms As Electricity Workers Begin Strike Tuesday

PHCN-power-station-360x270The already deplorable power situation in the country may worsen as workers in the power sector have threatened to stop the supply of electricity across the country by Tuesday, January 14.

The industrial action is a protest against the federal government’s refusal to conclude the payment of workers’ entitlements following the privatisation of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

The industrial action follows the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued by the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) to the federal government in December last year to conclude all labour-related issues in the sector.

Four people, including the driver, survived. The bus was heading towards Enerhen Junction.

According to a survivor, who does not want his name mentioned, tragedy struck immediately after a woman with a four-litre jerry can of petrol entered the front seat of the bus against the agitation of the passengers.

In his word: “I boarded the bus at PTI junction and we were heading to Enerhen Junction. The driver picked a woman who was carrying four litres of what was suspected to be petrol. We protested as the woman boarded.

He said he had been “angry” because Muslims killed his pregnant wife, his-sister-in law and her baby. AREGBESOLA: The Ultimate Honour

AREGBE 1It is to him who masters our minds by the force of truth, not to those who enslave men by violence; it is to him who understands the universe, not to those who disfigure it, that we owe our reverence- Voltaire (1694-1778)
And so one after the other in the year of our Lord 2013, the awards saluting the remarkable achievements of State of Osun Governor Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola rolled in.

Hundreds of kilometers away in Ghana, the respected Integrity International magazine had noticed what the governor was doing to redefine governance in a continent that had for ages suffered at the hand of its leaders. It gave Aregbesola its Integrity Award declaring that the man had offered what it called “outstanding quality and integrity” in political administration. The journal lamented that much of the post-independence era had given Africa leadership without integrity; it concluded that things had however been different with the advent of the Ogbeni in Osun.

Another accolade later came in. Aregbesola bagged the Odua

The church members defended their pastor who has been widely criticized for this practice and said eating grass has not only brought them closer to God but also heals them of illnesses.
‘Yes, we eat grass and we’re proud of it because it demonstrates that, with God’s power, we can do anything,’ Rosemary Phetha told South Africa’s Times Live.

Rivers Crisis: Senator Abe Shot, Flown to London

Sen. Abe 2The steaming political crisis in Rivers State took a turn for the worse, yesterday, when Senator Magnus Abe was allegedly shot in the chest twice with a rubber bullet at a rally of the Save Rivers Movement, a pro Governor Chibuike Amaechi group at Obio/Akpor Local Council of the state.

There were conflicting accounts, claims and counter-claims over who shot the serving senator, who has been flown to London for better medication after first aid treatment in two hospitals in Nigeria. While Governor Amaechi’s aides accused the police of shooting Abe, the police distanced themselves from the act, saying that they do not use rubber bullets and did not fire any

False alarm – In Touch | The Nation Newspaper

SANUSI JONATHANMany who view President Goodluck Jonathan as a meek and gentle soul will find it hard to reconcile that image with the news of his hectoring phone conversation with Lamido Sanusi, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The President was angry, but meek souls are permitted to fly even into rage. The President betrayed impatience, and meek souls have the occasional free rein to fly off their hinges. The President did not understand the law, and meek souls sometimes are forgiven their lack of familiarity with the law, even though it is no excuse.

If meek souls are permitted to infringe on all of these rules, can we allow a president of a republic that kind of latitude and attitude? That was the question I could not live with or live down as I contemplated the story, first carried by Thisday, about the exchange between the President and the boss of the nation’s financial holy of holies.

The news from Rivers State will get nastier before it gets nice, if it ever will. What started as a small disagreement between Governor Rotimi Amaechi and First Lady Patience Jonathan over the renovation of a local school in Port Harcourt about four years ago has deteriorated into a full-scale war, with no weapons spared.

The fight took yet another dramatic turn recently when the majority leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly and prominent Amaechi supporter, Chidi Lloyd, was arrested and later charged for multiple murders. There’s no use trying to figure out if the charge makes any sense at all. That’s the last thing on the mind of the police. In their furious bid to teach Amaechi a lesson, the police seem quite pleased to suspend common sense and make a complete fool of themselves so long as it makes Aso Rock happy.

Lloyd is not the target. To charge him with an offence, which at
