The leader of the Democratic Republic of Congo's M23 rebel group has allegedly surrendered in Uganda.

According to the BBC, a source said Sultani Makenga and about 1700 M23 rebels were disarmed and surrendered in the Mgahinga National Park and are being held at a secret location.

A Ugandan spokesperson said there will be no decision to take Makenga back to the DR Congo until a peace deal is signed as expected this weekend.

This comes after the Congolese army claimed victory against the M23 this week forcing the rebels to end their insurgency.

Makenga is wanted in the DR Congo for war crimes for his leadership of the rebellion and is also under UN sanctions.
