The Federal Government said on Wednesday in Uyo it would leave no stone unturned in its quest to ensure that every child of school age was enrolled into school.

The Minister of State for Education and Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, made the pledge at the maiden Nigerian Army Education Corps Summit.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Wike was represented at the event by the Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Daniel Ezuoke.

The summit had as its theme 'Education Sector Development in Nigeria: Tackling Contemporary Challenges'.

Wike said the country needed to work hard if it would achieve the Education For All (EFA) and the education components of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

"In spite of the significant achievement recorded since the launch of UBE programme, Nigeria still has much to do, especially in the area of Out-of-School-Children, which is put at over 10 million.

"The 'Almajiri' Education Programme is a key strategy for addressing the high number of Out-of-School-Children in Northern Nigeria.

"It provides opportunities for `Almajiris’ to benefit from mainstreaming and promoting a dynamic `Almajiri’ education that will ensure integration of over nine million children into Universal Basic Education,” he said.

The minister said the present administration's intervention programmes, especially on advocacy and sensitisation for improved access, had resulted in increased enrolment into schools, especially in the South-South states.

In his remarks, the chairman of the occasion, retired Maj.-Gen. Edet Akpan, said the Nigerian Army had always accorded the education and training of its personnel top priority.

"The Army has been able to heal itself from the problems of illiteracy and I pray that they can share their experience with the nation," Akpan, who was a former Commander of the Nigerian Army Education Corps, said.
