Today's Sport News: Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal

 Manchester United 1-0 Arsenal
Robin van Persie's first half header was enough to secure Manchester United a massive 1-0 win against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The Dutch international again haunted his former team-mates to ensure David Moyes' men moved back into the Premier League title shake-up against Arsene Wenger's current table-toppers.

Following a close opening to the contest United took the lead on 27 minutes as Wayne Rooney swung in a corner from the left and Van Persie got up highest towards the near post and sent a header looping into the far corner of the net.

Arsenal's first real effort came on 36 minutes but Olivier Giroud was off target with his header from Aaron Ramsey's ball into the box. United then had a hopeful penalty shout turned down when Rooney went down under a challenge from Giroud.

Arsenal stepped things up in the second half without really creating too much as Mesut Ozil lashed an angled drive into the side-netting from the left of the area on 58 minutes.

Two minutes later Rooney could have sealed the points when he moved the ball onto his left foot on the edge of the area but dragged his effort just wide of Wojciech Szczesny's left-hand post.

On 76 minutes a half-cleared corner dropped to Kieran Gibbs just outside the United area and his effort took a slight deflection on its way through to David De Gea who made a fine low save.

United continued to defend resolutely but almost conceded an injury time equaliser when Nicklas Bendtner was inches away from connecting to a Bacary Sagna cross from the right.

The victory moves United up to fifth - five points behind the Gunners - above Manchester City and Tottenham who both lost earlier on Sunday, while Wenger's men stay top but their lead over Liverpool is now down to two points.
