Sixteen people on Monday escaped death in an auto crash that occurred on the Abakaliki-Enugu expressway.

The accident involved a commercial Toyota bus belonging to the Enugu State Transport Company and an articulated vehicle.

An eyewitness said that although no lives were lost, two of the 16 bus passengers were seriously injured while 14 others sustained varying degrees of injury.

Mr Taiwo Eseyin, the Ebonyi Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps who confirmed the crash, said his men rushed to the scene and conveyed the injured to the Federal Medical Centre in Abakaliki.

He warned motorists and other road users to obey traffic signs and rules and avoid exceeding the speed limit.

While reiterating the readiness of the corps to ensure safety on the roads as the yuletide approaches, Eseyin said it would apply traffic laws to deal with offenders.

"We have adopted some measures including awareness campaigns at motor parks to sensitise drivers and other road users to avoid reckless driving and obey road signs and traffic rules.

"I am appealing to motorists to always drive safely in order to stay alive; it is better to be late than to be the late," he said.
