South Sudan president Salva Kiir has reportedly declared a curfew in the country's capital of Juba after saying clashes between the rival groups of soldiers were caused by an "attempted coup".

According to reports, Kiir said the milit
ary has stopped the coup but accuses former vice-president Riek Machar, whom he sacked in July, of orchestrating it.

The Guardian reports Kiir said, "However, I would like to inform you, at the outset, that your government is in full control of the security situation in Juba."

This comes after Juba was rocked by gunfire and explosions this past weekend due to alleged fighting between the presidential guard from the Nuer ethnic group and a group of Dinka guards at their military barracks.

About 10 000 people have since taken refuge at two United Nations compounds.
