2013 style icons
They are style icons and made statements in the year 2
013. Gorgeous and trendy, they cannot be missed in a crowd. They made the outgoing year tick

Mo Abudu
Mosunmola Abudu, a.k.a Mo Abudu, is one of several Nigerians recently listed by the New African Magazine as 100 Most Influential Africans.  A few years ago, she rounded off a 20-year-old career in human resources to try out television. Today, that experimentation has paid off handsomely. From hosting TV talk show, Moments with Mo, she is currently the founder and Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Ebony Life TV, Africa’s first global black multi-broadcast entertainment network.
The media entrepreneur’s knack for creative enterprise compares satisfactorily with her in-depth knowledge of fashion trends which has placed her on a pedestal many of her peers can only dream of. A leader by several miles, she is constantly setting the pace. In her late 40s and blessed with a well-groomed silhoutte, Abudu is one dark and lovely-skinned belle whose fashion choices in the outgoing year have been a subject of discourse many time times over and without fail. A mother of two, Mo likes it sensational and savours a style only her kind can pull off effortlessly.

Tiwa Savage
Sexy songstress, Tiwa Savage, has no doubt had a good run in 2013. The multiple award-winning ‘Eminado’ crooner is unarguably Nigeria’s best dressed female artiste. Her style, though distinct, is awesome. Tiwa, who has the physique to rock as many styles as possible, exploited this advantage fully. From mini to maxi dresses, shorts, jumpsuits and whatever you can think of, she looked her best in every attire. Patronising local and international designers, she made more than enough style statements.

Nike Osinowo
Ex-beauty queen, Nike Osinowo, is a style icon in every sense of the word. She was crowned Miss Nigeria in 1983.  The 47-year-old continues to blaze the style trail with her eye-popping selections. A graduate of Political science from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, she has proved to be a combination of beauty, brains and brawn. She is like the proverbial wine that gets better with age. Nike can never be missed on the red carpet. Not even paparazzi give her a breather!
Not a lot of women her age can boast her lovely slim figure. Indeed, she has ruled the fashion and style calendar of 2013 and it is doubtful if she will slow down come 2014.

Agbani Darego
The story of how Agbani, a starry-eyed young lady, ascended the throne as queen of the world may be an old one. But it will go down in the annals of history as very remarkable. Years later, Agbani walks and talks like the queen and her sense of style is impeccable. She carries herself with the grace and poise, which can only be associated with ladies of the Victorian era.
With a smart head on her shoulders, she delved into the world of business, launching her own Denim line. Though the waters of entrepreneurship in Nigeria may be murky, the slim, almost fragile-looking lady possesses surprising strength and determination that see her diving in at all cost. All these she does and still keeps her style together and as a reference point for fashion conscious ladies.

Wizkid
Real name, Ayo Balogun, Wizkid has a style regimen that stands him out. In his early 20s, Wizkid music career teed off to a fantastic start and he has not looked back ever since. Just like his music keeps getting better, so does his style. Opting for pricey attire and accessories, he does a classy mix of modern trends. Although he prefers to dress in a hip hop fashion, that does not take the shine off him.  Little wonder he can easily pass for one of Nigeria’s best dressed entertainers.

Ohimai Atafo
Perhaps the most awarded male cloth designer in Nigeria, Ohimai Atafo has come a long way since embracing his passion a little over five years ago. For one who cleverly caters for men and women, he has made his imprints in the sands of time. These days, no red carpet is complete without his designs. Dressing celebs on and off the red carpet, not a few have benefitted from his ingenuity. Besides, he is a fantastic dresser himself which makes him the first beneficiary of his craft.

Nkiru Anumudu
Her style is eclectic and adventurous. Nkiru Anumudu favours top of the range designs and this year, she has adorned some of the season’s best from the stable of famous designers in the world. Nkiru’s style routine is one that is certain to turn heads as she settles for only the unusual. This year alone, she has adorned some of the most exotic hair pieces, most absurd hand bags and intricate designs.

Deola Sagoe
The exclusivity inherent in Deola Sagoe’s designs places her many miles ahead of her contemporaries. Perhaps one of the best in this part of the world, her across-the-board fame is one only very few dare dream of. An acknowledged advocate of haute couture, Deola’s style is all-encompassing. This mother of three is constantly upping the style stakes. Outstanding in 2013, she creates a blend of the modern and traditional.

Lisa Folawiyo
Since founding her couture label, Jewel by Lisa, amazingly talented designer, Lisa Folawiyo, has gone from a budding designer to clothing local and international celebrities. Popularising ornately embellished Ankara, her amazing ingenuity is one that has earned her international recognition thus making her one of the most sought after cloth designers in Nigeria and beyond. With a discerning eye for tailoring and fit, Lisa is just as stylish as any of her clients. Her style, though demure, is chic and elegant. Her well-groomed petite frame enhances her style in a way many long for.

Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi
Trendsetting designer, Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi’s eponymous label, LDA, remains one of Nigeria’s foremost, especially in the elite circles. Her love for the vintage look has fast become synonymous with her personal style. Incredibly artistic, she has come up with some of the most intriguing designs ever. Lanre obviously practises what she preaches and that is reflected in her style regimen. Raising the ante, Lanre’s conspicuous knack for dressing the part can’t be ignored.
