The traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, has urged the people of Anambra to accept whoever was declared winner of the 16 November governorship election in the state.

Briefing journalists in Awka on Wednesday, Nwosu said this had become necessary in the interest of peace in the state.

The royal father, who commended the peaceful conduct of the election, said the poll demonstrated that Nigeria had come of age in conducting elections.

The monarch, however, appealed to all contestants to accept whoever emerged the winner after the conclusion of the poll in the spirit of sportsmanship.

In her reaction, the President-General of Anambra Association of Town Unions, Women Wing, Dr Chinelo Okechukwu, said the election was hitch-free and commendable.

Some 15 state chairmen of various political parties in a communiqué issued at the end of their deliberations on Wednesday said the election was peaceful.

Their spokesperson and Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Movement (PDM), Mr Chuba Ikeagwu, however, noted that the election had some flaws and advised INEC to improve on subsequent elections.

In a related development, the National Coordinator of Independent Domestic Election Observers of Nigeria, Dr Gabriel Nwambu, told a news conference on Wednesday that the poll was violence-free.

Nwambu commended the security agencies and INEC for living up to expectations by providing adequate security.

Meanwhile, a group known as Young Citizens of Nigeria, Anambra chapter, has called on INEC to hasten up the conduct of the supplementary election and declare a winner for the poll.
T
he group which carried out a peaceful protest at Aroma Junction in Awka on Wednesday, said the non-declaration of a winner was already building tension in the state.

Speaking on their behalf, Mr Tochukwu Obiadi, said the lacuna created by the non-declaration of a winner might spell doom if not quickly treated.

He asked INEC to facilitate everything that had to do with the supplementary election and release the result as quickly as possible.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC declared the election inconclusive following some irregularities in some parts of the state.

So far, Chief Willie Obiano of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is leading in the votes released and is closely followed by Mr Tony Nwoye of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
