Cassava farmers in Birniwa, Jigawa, on Thursday commended the Birniwa Local Government Council for its support aimed at accelerating cash crop production in the area.
A cross section of the farmers told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birniwa that the initiative had encouraged cassava, cowpea and groundnut production in the area.
Malam Ali Yusfari, a farmer, said he had cultivated two hectares of cassava and groundnut with support from the scheme. Yusfari also said that farmers in the area were given fertilisers and seeds to encourage cassava cultivation in the area.
Musa Abubakar, another farmer, said they were trained on proper chemical application, preservation and modern farming techniques.
"We are cultivating cassava, groundnut and other crops. Unlike before when we cultivated only millet, maize and sorghum to feed our families," he said. The farmers called for the expansion of the programme to enhance participation. NAN reports that the both the council and the Community-Based Agriculture and Rural Development Programme (CBARDP) provided support to the farmers.
The CBARDP is being implemented in seven northern with funding the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and counterpart contribution from the Federal and state governments.
